SARA’S RANDOM, BUT VERY USEFUL, SKINCARE (AND CLEANING) HACKS
Hi, Sara here!
Today I’m going to share with you some rather strange, but very useful, beauty hacks. Because I got a bit carried away whilst writing this post, I threw in some cleaning tips as well. How very kind of me :)
I’m sure it’s not just me who has picked up on some random little tricks over the years, either through recommendations from others or through simply discovering something brilliantly handy your self. Well for me it is a mixture, and here they come!

HEAL YOUR SPOTS FASTER AND BETTER BY USING COMPEED COLD SORE PLASTERS
Zsanett and I are both cursed with getting the dreaded cold sores from time to time. The many tiny blisters that can appear on your lips and cause you a large amount of pain. We often laugh (bitterly) about the fact that we only need to look at a cold sore to catch it 1 hour later. Zsanett came to mine with a cold sore a few years back, and I freaked out of course (I know I’m so mean, but people freak out around me too when I got it). We were super careful making sure we didn’t drink from the same glass etc, BUT of course only a few hours after she arrived I too started to feel the tingling sensation in my upper lip before the dreaded blisters started to appear.
An absolute must and my saviour through cold sore outbreaks are the Compeed cold sole plasters. It covers it up completely, making it non-contagious both in terms of it spreading to other parts of my lips, as well as not having it spread to others. It numbs the pain and has medication in it to help it heal faster. The plasters actually make having a cold sore bearable. A few years ago I actually got a cold sore on my chin (!!!). I had no clue that was even possible, but there it was - a blistering mess on my chin :( I used the Compeed plasters to treat it, and it stayed on my face all day long with no problem at all. It actually worked even better on the skin than on the lips. The issue with the lips is that the plaster will get quite disgusting after a while due to eating and drinking etc. That is not an issue when it comes to the rest of your face, where the plaster can be left alone :)
Ok so here comes the beauty hack (sorry about all the babbling)! The plaster also works really well when it comes to helping a spot heal. You should of course always leave spots alone and NEVER pick them. But… if you are stupid like me and just can’t leave them alone, only resulting in you creating a bleeding wound where your spot was - then these Compeed plasters will be very useful to you. I started cutting up the circular plasters into 3-4 small pieces. This makes it the perfect size to cover your damaged spot. What the plaster does is that it heals it whilst adding a cover to the wound. The spot will not form a dark red crust like you would normally get naturally, making it heal so much faster, and you will also have a way smoother area to apply makeup on. Another great thing about it is that the plaster will keep it clean! You should, of course, avoid touching your face and spot, but we tend to do it anyway without thinking. The plaster will protect your spot from all the bacterias that your fingers would normally add to it. And the great thing is - it is transparent, so it is almost invisible on your skin. The other day I kept tapping my painful spot right in the middle of my eyebrows. Annabell then had a go at me (rightfully so) saying ‘stop touching your spot’. And I was like ‘It’s fine, I have a plaster over it’. And she hadn’t noticed it at all :)
So I can highly recommend these plasters, both for actual cold sores and for spots that you have damaged using your fingernails - you will be amazed at how great it works!
USE HYDROCORTISONE (FOR A SUPER SHORT PERIOD!!) TO TREAT SORE CORNERS OF YOUR MOUTH
It is quite painful when the corner of your mouth get sore, and it can take ages to heal. Most people seem to think that it is the same as getting dry and sore lips in general, or maybe they think they have got a small cut in one of the corners. But usually this soreness is caused by inflammation, and the condition is called Angular Cheilitis. This inflammation can be caused by infection, irritation, or allergies, and can occur on either one or both sides of your mouth.
I got Angular Cheilitis a few years back, and after patiently waiting for it to heal for 3 weeks, only to find it getting worse, I started googling in hope of finding a way to treat it. This is what I found out:
Do not use lip balm to heal it! The inflammation is growing due to the area being moist, so keeping it dry is important. It is not the same as when your lips get sore, and it should therefore also be treated differently!
Hydrocortisone will (most likely) get rid of it within 24 - 48 hours. At least it did in my case! Putting hydrocortisone on your face is a big NO! It makes your skin thin and sensitive, and if used for longer than a few days it can actually cause your skin to develop eczema. However, it will do wonders for the corner of your lips, have you developed Angular Cheilitis. I can’t really recommend this as I’m not a doctor nor a dermatologist, but I can share with you my own experience. I had this condition on both corners of my mouth quite badly for about 3 weeks. I started applying hydrocortisone to it 3 - 4 times a day for 2 days, and it disappeared completely in that short period. I only applied the cream to the inflamed area and stopped using it once my skin and lips were back to normal. Now when I occasionally feel the corners of my mouth start to get sore, I apply the cream once or twice for one day only, and it stops it developing immediately. I personally find this little skincare hack super handy, but please be extremely careful and conscious when using any form of steroid on your face!!
SUDOCREM TO HELP SOOTH IRRITATED SKIN
I have been struggling with a rash around my nose for quite a few months now, and I’m still struggling. However, I have recently found a way to make it way better and my skin seems to finally be getting back to normal thanks to Sudocrem.
I have tried sooo many different things for my rash over the last months. Anything from expensive skincare products to home remedies. With a constant itchy red rash around my nose, I have been desperate and have therefore spent loads of money buying all kind of products in hope of curing this. About 2 weeks ago I got recommended Sudocrem - yes, the cream parents apply to their baby's bottoms to heal nappy rash. It is a thick white cream with a high content of zinc that you can buy over the counter at pharmacies, and it costs next to nothing! Yay :)
It looks a bit ridiculous when rubbed around my nose, but it is the first thing that really seems to be helping me. So if you find yourself developing a rash or irritation on your skin - try applying a nice thick layer of Sudocrem when you are just at home, and also keep it on overnight. It will hopefully help your skin heal, and if not at least it won’t do any harm to your skin or to your wallet :)
AND NOW, OVER TO SOME HANDY CLEANING HACKS!
Housekeeping is not really something we cover here on THE 4 OF US as our main focus is on beauty and fashion related topics. This post was supposed to be all about skincare hacks, but I’m feeling very generous today so I thought I’d throw in 2 little cleaning tips which I find very handy, and they are both related to baby oil (yes, another product meant for babies).
POLISH YOUR STAINLESS STEEL USING BABY OIL
A few years back when my boyfriend, Ben, and I were doing up the house we were trying to avoid Stainless Steel in the kitchen, as we find it so annoying that you constantly get fingermarks all over it etc. And then when cleaning it you get loads of watermarks and streaks. Then a woman in one of the kitchen shops we were in recommended that we used baby oil to wipe over any stainless steel surfaces to make it look shiny, fingerprint-free, and brand new! And it works really well! Just spray a small amount of baby oil on the surface you are cleaning and use either a cloth or some paper towel to polish it evenly over the surface. We now use it on our fridge, our stainless steel bins, the cooker and even the sinks. Works like a dream each time! Just remember to clean the surface properly first using soap or an antibacterial kitchen spray etc. The baby oil polish is not exactly getting rid of any bacterias and germs, just making it look really nice and shiny :)
YOU CAN ALSO USE BABY OIL ON YOUR WELLINGTON BOOTS
The same thing applies here, as with the stainless steal. If your wellington boots are starting to look a bit old and dull, which usually happens over time when using the boots outside in wet and muddy weather, then just polish them using some baby oil and they will look shiny and pretty new once more! You can, in theory, use any kind of oil, but baby oil smells quite nice and I like the fact that you can buy a spray bottle which will make it easier to apply a small and even amount of oil. In this photo here you can see how my old boots got transformed in a few minutes only using a bit of baby oil and paper. The difference is huge!
That’s all from me for now! Please leave a comment with your best hacks if you have any, whatever it might be related to. I always love learning new and handy little tricks :)
